As the season changes it’s imperative to remember the essential items to pack in your bag and wear while riding public transportation. I can recall when I first moved to the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) six years ago and was preparing to catch public transportation for the first time. I was warned that being comfortable trumped looking cute in your fancy heels. I’m a lover of heels as I’m under 5 feet in height; however, I’ve learned to make it work without the heels and have replaced them with either flats or small block heels. While we can’t predict the temperamental public transportation in the DMV , we can be prepared for anything by dressing comfortably and chic.
Flats are an important staple in a commuter’s wardrobe. As mentioned, I prefer block heels or ballerina slippers. Zara and Sam Edelman has some of the most stylish and reasonably priced flats. If you prefer designer flats that you can wear not only to work but on the weekend as well. I recommend Balenciaga flats or Tory Burch.
Spring and summer brings rain showers. Flats are not the most comfortable or appropriate pair of shoes to wear during this weather. I recommend purchasing the short rain boots that come to your ankle. I prefer fun colors or prints. DSW and Nordstrom Rack has a great selection of rain boots.
Work bags are needed for carrying your laptop, iPhone, notepads, lip gloss, lotion, and other toiletries you are able to manage to pack with you and take to work every day. I prefer two strap leather tote bags in a neutral color that can be purchased in DSW or Target. However, I plan on investing in a leather briefcase or backpack for work travel out of town. They look easier to manage in the airport.
When walking to lunch from the office or going to run a quick errand, you don’t necessarily want to take your work bag with you. I recommend purchasing a wristlet that is big in size to carry credit cards, cash, and metro pass. This item makes for a comfortable walk if you need to grab something on the go all the necessary items are available to you right at your wrist. TJMaxx offers a wide variety of wristlet wallets from designers and inexpensive brands.
Cheers to happy commuting whether you are in the DMV, NY, Chicago, ATL, Charlotte, or Houston. Check back this summer for more tips on how to be fashionable and comfortable while commuting. Remember to stay hydrated this summer!
