DON'T LET GO THE COAT

Updated: Nov 20, 2019

I hate to say it ladies but it’s that time of year to hang up those leather jackets and grab a coat. Well I guess that truly depends on where in the country you live. I reside on the east coast and temperatures are dropping rapidly everyday as we get closer to the winter season. Below are a few alternatives to leather jackets that will keep you warm and stylish all season long. I’ve selected to showcase classic puffer, wool, and fur coats on the higher and lower end.

Puffer Coats

As I mentioned, I live on the east coast and a warm coat is needed for the cold snowy weather. Hate to say this but I learned the hard way my first year moving to Maryland. It’s so funny how the temperature can change so drastically from one state to the next. I never needed a true down feather coat before moving to this area. I invested in a puffer coat from Bloomingdale's a couple years ago. While it was on the more expensive side – it was an investment and well worth it. Pictured below are a few options from Bloomingdale’s and more reasonably priced options from JcPenney and Zara.

How to wear: Short or waist length puffers look great with jeans and hiking boots or tights and a shift dress paired over a turtleneck. Think 90’s East coast rap and R&B video’s & the movie Clueless vibes.

Wool Coats

Wool coats are no longer your mother’s boring coat with shoulder pads from the 80’s! In fact, I believe they add so much life to any outfit. Whether you decide on a camel wool with a fur collar or a bold yellow coat. They are the easiest coats to pair with any work outfit. No matter the occasion you can never go wrong with a wool coat. Nordstrom and Dillard’s have a great selection of coats, while Target provides a least expensive alternative as well.

How to wear: There is no right or wrong way to wear a wool coat. This is a staple item that should be in every women’s closet. Wool coats accessorize well with leather gloves, silk scarf, or wool beanie.

Fur Coats

There are two childhood memories that I can recall that influence my want for a fur coat today – my grandmother had a huge collection of furs she would wear to events, and watching Whitley Gilbert on the television show, A Different World, sashay around her college campus in a mink coat. While I haven’t graduated to actual fur coats at this point – I do have a few faux furs. Boohoo and Banana Republic have good faux alternatives. I hope to purchase a fur before the end of the winter at Bloomingdale’s.

How to wear: Pair a faux fur or actual fur with a dress to holiday parties or leather pants to a girl’s brunch/dinner.
